Floor Layer

A Floor Layer is a person who puts down new floors in homes, schools, shops, and offices. They make sure the floor is flat, smooth, and looks great. Floor layers work with things like carpet, wood, vinyl, or tiles to create a floor people can walk on comfortably and safely.

What tools do you use to do your job?

Floor layers use lots of helpful tools, such as:

• Knives to cut carpet or vinyl to the right size
• Measuring tapes to make sure everything fits perfectly
• Glue and rollers to stick floors down properly
• Hammers and nail guns for wooden floors
• Trowels to spread glue smoothly

What makes a good Floor Layer?

A good floor layer needs to:

• Be careful and neat, so the floor looks tidy
• Have good maths skills to measure and cut correctly
• Be strong and fit, because the job involves lifting heavy rolls and kneeling down a lot
• Enjoy working with their hands and tools
• Be able to solve problems, like fixing bumps or gaps in the floor

What do you do each day?

Each day, a floor layer:

1. Looks at the room and checks what kind of floor is needed
2. Cleans and prepares the surface
3. Measures and cuts the floor materials
4. Lays down the flooring carefully and sticks it in place
5. Makes sure it’s smooth and neat
6. Cleans up after finishing the job
