Arborist
An arborist is a tree doctor. They look after trees in parks, gardens and streets. They check if trees are healthy or sick. They trim branches so trees grow strong and don’t fall. They also plant new trees and help them grow big and tall.
What tools do you do to do your job?
- Climbing ropes and harnesses: to climb high into the tree safely.
- Pruning shears and saws: to cut away dead or extra branches.
- Pole pruners: long poles with a cutter on the end for high branches.
- Wood chipper: turns branches into small wood chips for mulch.
- Ladders and lifts: to reach parts of the tree you can’t climb.
- Safety helmet and gloves: to protect your head and hands from falling bits of tree.
What makes a good arborist?
- Caring: loves trees and wants them to be healthy.
- Brave and careful: not afraid of heights but always works safely.
- Strong: can carry tools and climb with heavy gear.
- Patient: knows that trees grow slowly and need time.
- Problem-solver: spots bugs, rot or disease and figures out how to help.
What do you do each day?
- Inspect trees: look for broken limbs, insect holes or fungus.
- Talk with people: ask homeowners or park managers about tree problems.
- Prune branches: trim away dead or dangerous limbs.
- Climb trees: use ropes or ladders to reach high branches.
- Plant or transplant: dig holes and put young trees into the ground.
- Clean up: run branches through the chipper and sweep up wood chips.
- Plan for tomorrow: decide which trees need checking next and get tools ready.
