Banksman
A banksman helps big vehicles and machines move safely on a building site. They stand where the driver can’t see and use signals or a “STOP” sign to guide them. This keeps everyone and everything safe.
What tools do you use to do your job?
- High-visibility vest and hard hat: So everyone can see you and you stay safe.
- Gloves and safety boots: To protect your hands and feet.
- Handheld “STOP” sign or flag: To tell drivers when to stop or go.
- Radio: To talk to the machine driver if you are far apart.
- Whistle or horn: For quick attention in noisy places.
What makes a good banksman?
- Clear hands and signals: You must make big, easy-to-see movements so drivers know exactly what to do.
- Good listening: You pay close attention to radio messages and sounds on the site.
- Patience: You stay calm and repeat instructions until the driver understands.
- Alertness: You watch everything around you to spot dangers early.
- Kindness and teamwork: You help everyone feel safe and work together.
What do you do each day?
- Put on safety gear: You zip up your vest, snap on your hard hat, and tie your boots.
- Check the area: You look for obstacles, holes, or anything that might cause danger.
- Meet the driver: You agree on signals and where you will stand.
- Guide the machine: You use your sign, hands, or radio to show the driver where to move.
- Watch for hazards: You call out if someone walks into the path or if something changes.
- Help unload loads: You show where to drop materials, like bricks or beams.
- Finish the shift: You tidy up your tools and tell your supervisor what happened.
By doing these steps every day, a banksman keeps the worksite running smoothly and everyone stays safe!
