Bricklayer

A bricklayer builds the walls and structures you see around you—like homes, schools, shops, and even castles in theme parks! They take drawings made by architects and turn them into real buildings by stacking bricks and blocks in neat rows.

What tools do you use to do your job?

  • A trowel to spread sticky mortar (that’s building “glue”) between bricks
  • A spirit level to check that each row of bricks is perfectly straight
  • A brick hammer or chisel to trim bricks so they fit just right
  • A jointers tool to smooth the mortar lines for a tidy finish
  • Safety gear like a hard hat, strong boots, and gloves to protect yourself

What makes a good bricklayer?

  • Careful and precise: Every brick must line up exactly or the wall won’t be strong.
  • Strong and fit: Lifting bricks all day takes muscles and energy!
  • Problem-solver: If a wall looks uneven, you need to figure out how to fix it.
  • Team player: Bricklayers often work with other builders, so talking clearly and helping each other matters.

What do you do each day?

  1. Read the plans: Look at the drawings to see how many bricks you need and where each wall goes.
  2. Prepare your mortar: Mix cement, sand, and water until it’s just the right sticky texture.
  3. Lay the bricks: Spread mortar, place a brick, tap it level, then check with your spirit level.
  4. Build up: Keep adding rows, adjusting as you go so the wall stays straight and strong.
  5. Finish off: Smooth the mortar lines, clean your tools, and pack up safely for tomorrow.

Bricklayers help turn empty spaces into places where people live, learn, and play—one brick at a time!
