Estimator

An estimator helps figure out how much a construction project will cost before it even begins. They look at plans and drawings of buildings, then work out how much money is needed for materials, tools, and workers. Estimators help make sure there’s enough money to build things like houses, schools, roads, or hospitals.

What tools do you use to do your job?

Estimators use computers to help them do their work. They often use special software (kind of like advanced calculators and spreadsheets) to add up all the costs. They also use rulers and measuring tools to look at building plans, and sometimes visit building sites to see things for themselves.

What makes a good Estimator?

A good estimator is someone who is great at maths and paying attention to small details. They also need to be very organised and good at solving problems. Being able to work with others and explain their ideas clearly is also important.

What do you do each day?

Most days, an estimator works at a desk in an office. They read building plans, do lots of adding and calculating, and write reports. Sometimes they talk to builders and suppliers to find out prices for materials. Other times, they might go out to a building site to understand more about the job they are pricing.
