A lorry driver drives a big truck, called a lorry, to carry things from one place to another. These things could be building materials like sand, gravel, bricks, or pipes. Lorry drivers help make sure that everything needed for building arrives safely and on time at construction sites.

Lorry drivers mainly use their lorry, which is like a giant truck. They also use a sat nav (a computer that helps with directions), phones or tablets to get job details, and sometimes forklifts or tail lifts to help load or unload heavy things. They often wear safety clothes like hi-vis vests, hard hats, and work boots to stay safe.

What makes a good Lorry Driver?

A good lorry driver needs to be:

• Careful and focused – because driving a big truck needs full attention.
• Responsible – to keep everything and everyone safe.
• Good with directions – to find the best way to get to the site.
• Patient and calm – because there can be traffic or long journeys.

What do you do each day?

Every day, a lorry driver:

1. Checks the lorry to make sure it’s safe to drive.
2. Loads the materials they need to deliver.
3. Drives to different places, often to building sites.
4. Unloads the materials using a forklift or with help from others.
5. Fills in paperwork or updates a phone app to say the job is done.
6. Goes home or gets ready for the next delivery.
